In 1937 the wastewater and toxic waters that came from the mine Las Dos Estrellas ended up in the Del Carmen neighborhood causing an avalanche and burying a significant area of the town. This caused death of thousands of workers and their families. Nowadays you can still visit what is left of the Church of el Carmen: its tower, which was the only thing that survived this tragic event.
