Tlalpujahua and Angangueo, magical mining towns in Michoacán

Angangueo

Strolling around - Faith and history

The history of the mining towns is a blend of wealth and tragedy. In the mineral-rich highlands of Michoacan, Tlalpujahua and Angangueo became bustling towns in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, these Magical Towns preserve the memory of the mines that were both their livelihood and death.

Mineral de Angangueo is a magical mining town in the sierra. It nestles in a valley with large stone houses and flower-filled balconies. In the 19th century, gold, silver and copper were abundant and great fortunes were made such as those of the Sotomayor family, who built the Temple of the Immaculate Conception. Its history, beautifully retold in a mural by Arturo Estrada, is marked by tragedy. At the top, the Monument to the Miner pays tribute to the lives lost. In the gorge, Grupo México allows visits to the San Hilario mine and Catingón Castle.

In the Magical Town of Tlalpujahua, mining is present in the details. In small chapels on the way to the mines. In Tower of Carmen, the only memento of the sanctuary destroyed in 1937 together with much of the town in a mining accident, the slat catastrophe. The image of the Virgin was moved to the San Pedro and San Pablo Temple, which was built with money from the gold mines. From here, high above the town, look at the rooftops: instead of tiles you will see metal slats and drums covers used in the mines. To have an idea of what it is like to go underground, visit the Dos Estrellas Mine, turned into an extraordinary museum.
